How it Started:

George La Forge and Randel Aleman purchased and assembled Cave Lakes Canyon in 1996. George and Randel have been friends for thirty years, and have bought and sold over 500 million dollars of real estate in Southern Utah and Nevada. Of all the properties they have owned, Cave Lakes remains their most treasured property.

Both George and Randel had a vision about Cave Lakes Canyon. In order to follow their dream they dedicated a lot of time, energy and money into acquiring the property. After three years of legal battles solving seller's litigation and risking to lose several hundred thousands of dollars in the process, their dream finally came to realization. The final purchase of the first 568 concluded in 1998. Since then they have quietly assembled close to 1370 acres. The Cave Lakes is thought by many to be the most beautiful, privately owned property in Southern Utah; truly a bold statement as Southern Utah is known for its breath taking properties.

The canyon is truly a phenomenon! It features a 150-acre canyon floor bordered with 200 foot red sandstone walls. One hundred and ten (110) springs are running along its path, forming a multitude of caves some of them featuring a lake. Following their vision George and Randel designed and created seven additional lakes cascading into each other. They imported 800 tons of red sandstone boulders to create spectacular waterfalls, adding to the ambiance of this magnificent canyon. Numerous historic treasures are also featured all along the canyon dating back 200 BC to the Anasazi Indians and later to the official exploration of the Grand Canyon in the late the 1800's.

The Lakes
The lakes within the caves are all naturally formed, but we have gone to great lengths to expand the lakes in the central canyon area. Water has always flowed through the canyon and we have not only added lakes but have added water cascades and other features to enhance the aesthetic qualities of the canyon.

West Canyon
This 2.5 mile long canyon has different and interesting characteristics through the length of the canyon. The upper (western) sections of the canyon offer lower cliffs and convuluted twists and turns in the narrow spaces of the canyons beginnings.

The canyon floor descends in elevation as it moves east and it also gains depth and width as it flows this direction. Canyon walls become more vertical and more lakes become visible.

Central and East Canyon
The central and eastern portions of the canyon are where many of the caves are found and within some of these caves are pristine small lakes.

Grand Staircase Escalante
The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Visitor Center in Kanab should be your first stop when planning a visit to this vast and remote region. Inquire here about canyoneering, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trails, scenic drives, adventure tours, maps and more. The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Visitor Center is located on East Center Street and is open year round.

A scenic drive through Cottonwood Canyon is a great way to begin exploring Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Gas up and check with the visitor center in Kanab for road closures prior to heading out. Take US-89 for 32 miles until you reach Cottonwood Canyon Road, then head north. The unpaved road follows Cottonwood Wash as it winds through rugged cliffs, red rock formations and open wilderness. You'll pass the old Paria movie set. About 25.5 miles north of US-89, you'll reach the unmarked trailhead for Cottonwood Wash Narrows. A moderate hike along Cockscomb ridge leads deep into this popular slot canyon enclosed by sheer sandstone walls. Next, continue north to nearby Kodachrome Basin State Park or to Grosvenor Arch, a massive natural sandstone arch standing 152 feet high and spanning 92 feet across.

For a trace of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument's Old West heritage, try a scenic backcountry drive through Johnson Canyon. Johnson Canyon Road offers breathtaking views of Vermillion, White, and Pink steps of the Grand Staircase. You'll pass the old Gunsmoke movie set, the largest set constructed in the Kanab area, which can be viewed from the road about five miles from the US-89 turnoff. The partially paved Johnson Canyon Road also leads to Bull Valley Gorge, one of the narrowest and deepest slot canyons within Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Adventurers who complete the challenging full-day hike into Bull Valley Gorge will be see something unusual: an old pickup wedged between a bridge of boulders and tree trunks.

Heading north on US-89 leads to Scenic Byway 12, Utah's first All-American road which winds throughout parts of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Visit the rock formations in Devil's Garden, located along Hole-in-the-Rock Road or continue on the Burr Trial. Head east on US-89 for about 60 miles from Kanab to the white stone Wahweap Hoodoos on the edge of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The four-mile hike through Wahweap Wash is fairly easy, and leads to two more challenging hikes to reach additional coves of hoodoos. Head back west about 12 miles for a short hike to the Rimrock Hoodoos.

Common hikes within Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument include the 5.5-mile moderately strenuous hike along a developed trail through Lower Calf Creek Falls and more challenging hikes such as Death Hollow, The Gulch, and Twenty-mile Wash. Permits are required for extended backcountry hikes, and can be obtained at the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Visitor Center in Kanab.

Directions to Cave Lakes Canyon:

From the South / Interstate 15: Just past St. George / I-15 take the Hurricane Exit 9 and go east to Hurricane, Utah. In downtown Hurricane follow the signs that point to Grand Canyon / Kanab. Travel to Fredonia, Arizona and turn north to Kanab. Go through Kanab (north) along Highway 89 till you see Moqui Cave on the left. Just past Moqui Cave (500 yards) you will see a road turning left (west) into a canyon. This is Cave Lakes Canyon. Map to Kanab, Utah from St. George, Utah

From the North (Salt Lake City): Go south on Interstate 15 until till just past Beaver, Utah. You will see a sign leading east to Bryce Canyon. This is Highway 20. Go east to Highway 89 and turn south toward Panguitch, Utah. In Panguitch turn left at the main stop sign (flashing yellow light), and follow Highway 89 as it winds east and then south toward Kanab. Five miles before you arrive in Kanab you will see Moqui Cave ahead. On your left (500 yards before Moqui Cave) is a road going into a canyon on your right. This is Cave Lakes Canyon.

From Phoenix / Flagstaff: Go north on Highway 17 through Flagstaff. Follow signs to continue north on highway 89. Go past Cameron Arizona to the Bitter Springs and follow the road to Navajo Bridge where it crosses Marble Canyon. Follow 80 west to Jacob Lake, and then north to Fredonia and Kanab. Go through Kanab (north) along Highway 89 till you see Moqui Cave on the left. Just past Moqui Cave (500 yards) you will see a road turning left (west) into a canyon. This is Cave Lakes Canyon.
